I'm not positive, but I read in Bill Bowerman's biography that? during the '72 Olympics there was a terrorist attack on the Olympic Village and a bunch of Israeli athletes and coaches were taken hostage and were killed, so I feel like it has something to do with that.

No, I think it's a coincidence. This race occurred on Sept. 2 near the start of the Games. Note how Jim McKay says the Wottle win signified the first USA gold medal in those Games. The terrorism did not begin until Sept.? 4.
