I met Ustad Bismillah Khan in Atlanta while he was on tour. While talking to him he? said something to the effect "We are not really admired at home". In other words he was disappointed that he was not well off and had to struggle in India. Bestowing titles and honors is all fine and well which takes care of the respectability as an artist but what happens when you go without simple things that can only be had if you have money. ZAKIR HUSSAIN! :) Just check it out from 2:50 ! :) Have loved watching him up real close as well as at many concerts big n small at & around here in SF Bay Area & at AACM (Ali Akbar College of Music, been a member of for over a decade) in San Rafael. :) Enjoyed Swapna Chowdhury too, but Zakir's SO much into into it while playing its just as awesome to feel the zen-mode he goes into while playing it. It is highly probable that this Chitra Veena was the ancestor of all these above mentioned instruments. The Dotara of Bengal region (consisting of India and Bangladesh) is extremely popular in Bengali folk music. Another near extinct instrument is the Swaragat or Swarabat of South India. The Sarod of Classical Raga Music is also a very close relative? of the Kabuli Rubab.

Rubab has its origins in India (and by India I mean the entire Indian subcontinent, in? that way, even Afghans are Indians, culturally though, do not take it otherwise). During the Mughal era, the Seni Rubab used to be popular among the Hindi speaking population and was frequently played in the royal courts. You can search for Somjit Dasgupta in youtube.

Thank you for your correction, of course Lahara would only be used in a tabla solo and gat is used when the melodic player gives the tabla player a solo in this context, I also accept that the tabla player is playing his compositions as determined by his knowledge,guru, gharana etc and in a developing fashion so when i mentioned he could do what he wants i was being liberal with my speech, but? thanks anyway as i'm sure these comments will benefit other viewers. Very nice summary! May I add, respectfully, that Amjadji does not play lahara here, but a short gat instead. Also, when the tabla "improvises"? it does it in an organized manner (uthaan, peshkar, kayada, etc), and not playing what the tabla player feels like. Of course he chooses the compositions, but they're fixed ones; similar to what in melodic instruments or vocal music would be the Taans. ^^

I am no pandit at all, but may be I can contribute with something: Remember that Ahir Bhairav is a compose raga (Ahiri + Bhairav); hence, it may show character of both, plus? its own chalan (a resource called bhaav-tirobhaav). Hope it helps =)

Don't compare, I have known Jasraj-ji, a little bit and he is a big fan of Ustad Amir Khan saheb. Our classical music gives everybody a chance to interpret ragas, each? interpretation by a great singer is divine in it's own right. This is one of the main reasons why it has evolved into what it is. There is no competition - Also, Malkauns is such a vast raga that there is tremendous scope for improvisation in every presentation.

Hello, can anyone please tell me which chords will apply to Raaga Malkauns? Inspired by Ustaadji, I'm trying to make a tune based on the Raaga on my guitar, so I also need to decide the rhythm. Time signature implies a length fo bar than we can hear/apprehend as a "feeling" or "groove" (usually). Indian talas are longer and are therefore more of an organizational element or structural principle.

I just took "Kaatyaayani by Bombay Jayashri, Ustad Rashid Khan" from Coke Studio @ MTV: www.youtube.com and cut second half part comprising Bandish in Raag Charukeshi by Ustad Rashid Khan (My favourite part). Everyone has done equally good but Ustad Rashid Khan is just mind blowing, not to mention Punya Srinivas on Veena is equally good.

i agree? with you too, however id just like to say if the fusion matches the serenity of the classical piece then i guess its no harm done. As in, i agree, in this clip there is an interlude of fusion along with the veena. personally it would have been nicer just the veena on its own with the tabla and the other background instruments instead of the electric guitar simply because its a large powerful instrument with a sharp noise and thus dulls the beauty of Ustaad's voice.

These are market forces. The only way to counter them would be for young people to create a niche market for classical? music. In Pakistan, such an initiative has been undertaken : check out Lahore Music Forum on Youtube. There is still a long way to go . Classical music is an acquired taste. It cannot have mass appeal like Jugni .
