I fooled around on my own...I'd pull tv's out of the trash and try to fix them. Eventually? at age 47 I got job in a eletronic repair shop. You have to be careful when working on customer's stufff and if your break something you might get fired. So get lots of practice on some junk equipment first.

Thanks for this video. (*****). I made it one of my favorites. In 1967 I bought my first transistor (OC 13, germanium). Components were too expensive then and I had to salvage components from old equipment for many years. And, yes, mistakes are inherent to electronics and only after a some years of experiments the "insight" in what really happens will come. Advise to anyone interested in electronics: buy? an oscilloscope! You will speed up your experience.

actually, a regulator is no more efficient than using a resistor divider to lower the supply voltage. it? works in essentially the same way, only the resistance in the regulator is a transistor which can vary its resistance to insure that the output voltage stays steady for any load current.

Hey I work more inside of a tiny guitar cavity, which with my current soldering iron makes? the use of heat shrink wraps a regular necessity. DO pony up? extra money for a CO2 fire extinguisher. The powder fire extinguisher can trash your gear. Every vacuum tube HAM, or hi fi/radio guy will attest to how bad chemical powder fire extinguishers can destroy equipment. You O Scope won't care that it is not a HAM X-mitter, or old radio. I keep about 6 fire extinguishers around. Painting, potting in wax, or cleaning with solvents are all great ways to start a fire w/out electric! Wax, & IPA burn like petrol!

I have popped 2 pair of Lindstrrom small diagonal cutters, and seen others blown out. I just got two new Lindstroms one semi flush and one offset flush for $8 surplus. They? are brand new! Xuron, and Plato make OK cutters. Lindstrom makes the best! I have Diamond Horseshoe side cutters custom ground to do guitar fret work. They made good mini pliers too. Wiha makes great small screw drivers, but my old Radio Shack jewelers set keeps working. I though they were junk in 1980, but now they look OK!

Thanks for the power supply info. I do run the Lambdas in parallel. I also have some Gates that run at 650VDC. I do tube amps, so the Fluke1200 VDC @ 10 amps is the "GRAIL" for my design.? The Lambda is shockingly well regulated for an old tube loaded boat anchor. I run old Weller ESD safe pencils. I always keep 2 running while I do an amp. I use a IR tem sensor to check my soldering pencils. against. I do use good Ag solder. The junk solder spatters, & can trash a $7000 guitar. B&B=bread&butter

I have a couple B&B O scopes, and a 250MHz Tek, and 3 or 4 Fluke bench meters, Fluke hand held. Vacuum tube testers, 2 Weller soldering pencils, an? antique bridge (mostly for decoration) and a couple of LCRs. I also have curve tracers for SS and valves. I worked as an electrician in industry for many years. I won't use anything but a Fluke DVM. I have power supplies from the antique Lambda regulated 500 VDC B+ to smaller DC regulated and a great powered bread board 0-15 0-+15 and 5VDC!

Hi Dave, after many, many recommendations (from yourself and others), I have become annoyed with the single-turn pot on my variable power supply (an old linear supply from Heathkit). So, I have? ordered a high-quality 10-turn pot of the same value to replace it. The current limit control already is a 10-turn from the factory. Too bad Heathkit wanted to save $0.50, or else I wouldn't have to bother! One thing about old gear though.. it's nice that I have the room to fit the new part.

What I'm worried about is the slower response associated with the software calculations. One would think you'd need a pretty fast micro-controller and ADC/DAC or a DSP to handle? such functions with a very fast response time. For instance in the constant resistance mode, I would like it to be able to maintain the desired resistance closely even when subjected to excessive 120Hz ripple. I haven't yet ventured onto the EEVBlog forums but I might finally go and take a look. Thanks.

Thanks!! It's been bugging me since I saw the preview shot showing the obscured IC. Whenever I see a "sanitized" IC like this, I have an obsession to find out what it is. Like the Renesas RPBRX210 evaluation board -- on the back side there is a QFP that has apparently had its top chemically etched off. Clearly it was part of the Segger J-Link USB debug interface, and some more digging showed it to be an Atmel? AT91SAM7S64 ARM7. Renesas clearly didn't want to advertise for Atmel!

Yes. Plus, the lack of space in the back, as some components have obviously to be in the front part of the unit. I guess there's a very good reason for the transformer to be where it is, but I didn't see a lot of devices with such a configuration (power supply in the front). As it's not switch mode but transformer, the noise is low(er) and doesn't require big filtering or? shielding.

Actually, now I think about it: My education in electronics (when I was younger) almost completely stalled after his TTL series (I couldn't get the time/hw to finish it off as I was already working in the area, but I still learnt a lot through reading) Electronic magazines and open learning? was all down-hill from there (at least for a while) I remember I had the full collection then I lost the early issues and could never replace them :-(

ok, thanks. ya, too bad radio shack is limited with electronic parts now and their whole philosophy, and the? prices are incredible being that there is so much competition and price reductions on them it should be passed to the consumer/builders, some things are reasonable, and others way off, i guess "online" is the only way to go now, and salvaging parts and having junk boxes, after all a junk box is a treasure when its needed

The arrow in a schematic of a Transistor or? Diode drawing is not really to indicate current flow. The arrow is just to indicate the Anode(+) and Cathode(-) aspects of the Semiconductor. This helps the Technician see how the Semiconductor is Forward or Reverse Biased. It just so happens that the arrow points in the direction of "Conventional Voltage Flow" while "Conventional Current Flow" is the reverse direction,. from Cathode to Anode. This is for those who seek clarity is all.

As a buyer (among other things) I was on the other side of those regional distributors ( jobbers ) trying to buy magazines to sell in a computer store about 1983 and the "jobbers" required that I commit to a rediculously large quantity? or none. I felt like it was controlled by organized crime or something. I remember finding that a few magazines were NOT locked in with the jobber and would sell me a bundle of 30 magazines wholesale each month, COD. Sold all as courtesy, not profit.

Interesting guy, nice interview. As a critique (I know maybe? you haven't done a lot of interviews) but the "yep, exactly, yep, " coming out of the left speaker was very distracting. I wanted to focus on what he was saying. Giving him more time to breath would have been a tad better. But nice guy to interview and keep up the good work. Don't take this the wrong way.

That's exactly how I see it. At uni every topic had THE ONE reference book (mind you, I started computer science at a? time the internet was grey pages with blue links). After a few books (around a hefty 100? a piece) I came to the conclusion that's just stupid. I now teach programming, physics (basic level) and electronics (self-taught) at uni. Whenever I get a question about a "good" book, I say there's not one. Just compare different sources on the web and find one fitting your learning style.

Ahh? the memories, yes his first PCB on the mag was the Ant (good for tic-tac boxes) I reckon maybe I was that 6grader he mentioned in the other vid(we came from interstate, I demanded my dad let me visit TE, the only highlight for me) The best lessons in RF ever!!? I had work experience kid once bring-in the DSE single transistor on-PCB-Coil, and we pimped it for him by winding a proper coil (TE-style) and upping the voltage, it actually ran O.K after that. Thanks again Colin & TE (& Dave too!)

I've never come across U for voltage, it's always been V for? me since I was first taught physics. (But often u is used for velocity.) By the by, "t" is the normal symbol for time, not "s" as seen in this video, which is conventionally used for distance. Thus Q/s would be charge over distance, not charge over time.

I don't know, but my initial reactions to this video is: 1. Carry your card(s) in a different pocket? from your wallet. Perhaps a breast pocket. 2. If you don't plan on using it, don't carry it. Some stores have your records on file and allow charging without the card.

Think of it: to charge ANY item you buy you need a credit card number and? your name, period. So, if I flash my credit card while using an ATM and some huckster takes a picture of it with a cell phone, I'm screwed, because I don't check my credit statement because it cant be done online What total stupidity!!! Theres ways of paying for things using chip and pin systems without needing the real pin, you can just type any 4 numbers and the machine is fooled into thinking its the correct pin. Also because the pin? is "correct" the bank will laugh at you if you try to say it wasnt you. The last 3 digits of the security code on the back could be a problem thats if they dont put that information on the chip in your card lol

you need a Multiplexer-circuit which makes it possible to display the data on all digits of the display (lcds flash on and off really quickly due to the multiplexing) and a display-encoder which takes the data and turns on the relavent LEDs.... The LCD display is the easy bit, I want to know how to make a GPS from? basic ICs. Although I don't mind trying to work out how myself.
