Sham was a great horse, and held his own quite nicely in the Derby and Preakness. But in the Belmont, Secretariat delivered a knockout blow to end all knockout blows. After the first 3/4 mile, Sham's heart was taken away from him for good. But? let's face it, no horse in the history of racing could've even come close to beating Secretariat on that day.

It's neat to think that after the west was won, and all of the horses that contributed, that this horse, this guy may be the best horse that ever existed. horses dont give up. At that distance...those horses are? tired. He opened that gap because no horse could run with him. He ran each quarter mile faster than the one previous...while other horses slowed their pace, big red was able to increase his. They did not give up...he was just that good.

I want to say this before the notion comes up about I'll Have Another. First IHA is a fine horse, good enough to win the Derby and Preak by a nose.? And if he's good enough to win Belmont then he deserves to be a Triple Crown winner, one of only 12 horses to do so. In this light, he deserves every credit. No doubt he knows how to pull out a win. If you want the greatest, the most dominant, & greatest equine athlete ever, then you are talking Secretariat

Really? IHA at least has proven to have stamina enough to leg out a? win by a neck in two races. Congrats. Select group of horses have done that. But Secretariat dominated his fields. Won races in different and in compelling manner. he circled field in 1st turn & ran away w/ Preak; he ran faster every 1/4 in Derby; and he executed the greatest racing performance of all time in Belmont - IHA isn't in the same sport as Sec. Sec was truly a rarity - 1 of a kind. Like Sec...hardly.

Big Red just loved to run... it was? like a big game to him. If he hadn't had that abcess in the Wood, he would have gone off at 1-5 in the Derby, and 1-9 in the Preakness and Belmont. Sham was a good horse, but they ruined him trying to beat the Greatest.

I remember reading about how they were watching lucien train sec, and wanted to push sham harder to stay on? top. what's funny is I think sec could have taken being pushed even harder, and would have run the belmont even faster. also imagine in the derby and preakness, if they hadn't held sec back but just let him run as fast as he wanted to, he could have established untouchable records in all 3 races, not just one.

I seen horses that can barely make 1:13 going only 6 furlongs. He actually runs faster here at the 1 1/4 mile mark than he did in the Derby. Truly amazing.

Why Sec is the Greatest: 1) Derby he ran ea 1/4 faster than last - still standing record; 2) Preak - circled? the field in first turn and never was challenged - set track record; 3) Belmont - 2:24 and 31 length margin of victory; & a world record that has been unchallenged. Sec didnt just win races; he won them differently, all amazing examples of athleticism, and still has two records unbroken 39 years later. Due respect to MOW and others, but Sec was truly the greatest that will ever be.

Your right. Secretariat did his best himself but entirely his best performance bercause he not was encouraged to run faster.. Only a hand ride. Not driven out by no means. Easy Goer was a full 2 seconds slower running a much slower pace. Beating a horse by 10 lengths is a blow out, Not even close. This is the most amazing performance in racing horse history, no doubt about it. BIG? RED ran the mile in 94" flat and Ronnie stopped movin' him for several seconds. Then he ran the last 2 quarters in 25" each, and won handily. The very EASY GOER (second best time ever in this race) wouldn't even have changed the way Ronnie rode SECRETARIAT.

He was unique in many regards, not only a champion of the highest order, he inspired the nation in his day. I recall many discussions with total strangers back then about him, and what he meant to each. It was always positive, his persona captured? hearts and minds alike, even through TV. Disagree they lose to Sham, '73 race tracks were known to be faster than other years so you can't go by time, also other considerations such as Alydar being stuck in traffic in the derby? affected his finish and time, with a clear trip he would've pressed Affirmed resulting in a faster time.

Put them up against Sham and they lose also, at least in the Derby (official time) and Preakness (unofficial time) and probably even the Belmont, if Sham runs his natural "stalker" style instead of being forced into a front-running style he's? not used to. This was still a great race though! Even though Alydar placed second he clearly covered more ground being on the outside and his average speed here must have been - ironically - slightly higher than Affirmed.

Not likely to ever see as exciting a chase for the Triple Crown as this turned out to be. For pure excitement and closeness of all 3 races, this had to be the best ever. Secretariat's was great for his absolute dominance, but his was more of Secretariat vs. the clock. This one was? absolutley the most competitive.

For my money, all three of the triple crown races between Affirmed and Alydar came down to how the jockeys rode them. Each time, Jorge Velasquez had Alydar running outside of Affirmed. Alydar never got to the rail that i can see in all three races. If Steve Cauthen is ridiing Alydar instead of Affirmed, would the triple? crown winner have been different in 1978?

It is a classic call. It was so perfect that you would have thought that it was recorded after? the race or otherwise scripted. Durkin had another memorable call when Birdstone beat Smarty Jones. Still, Chic Anderson's 1973 Belmont calling Secretariat a "tremendous machine" is my favorite. Great post.

Looking back on this race, I'm still? undecided if it was actually Big Brown or Kent Desormeaux that just didn't want to put forth the effort in the Belmont Stakes on the day? What's ironic is that of the three Triple Crown field's that Big Brown faced in 08', the Belmont was the weakest field of the 3, IMO. It looked as though jockey cld've been thrown right over War Emblem's head, he was that close to ground.? This was a very brave horse to come back. Listening to call, maybe if he hadn't been successfully blocked in by 3 or 4 others on rail, he wld've made it. But I think the break and working his way thru just tired him.

Kind of sad War Emblem had some trouble in this race but he still gave it a great shot. He never quit but after that start? and getting "bottled up" I'm sure it got to his head as he was always a front runner. The fractions were pretty slow and he really didn't stand a chance having to overcome that start. I saw him race at Monmouth Park live in the Haskell which he won pretty easily but the race was just about set up for him to win. His owners got an 'appearance fee'.

Probably because the breed has been mismanaged where there has been an emphasis of breeding speed to speed. Back in those days, they would usually breed a fast sire line to a stamina mare line. That is exactly what gave us Secretariat, great speed from the sire, Bold Ruler and stamina from the Princequllo line on the bottom. Those are called nicks and the? lines have become so blurred that it is hard to tell the nicks apart. Mr. Prospector is a culprit.

Even with the slow early pace anyone can see that both Affirmed and Alydar? were on equal ground here. There was no victim losing because of a slow pace, something Alydar fans may have used in the past. I am not degrading Alydar in any respect. This race was exactly how Chic called it just about at the 1/2 mile poll. Speed duel and just about a match race now. Affirmed gets the TC title but both were champion racehorses and, arguably, deserved of each being a TC winner in most other years.

Who rode Affirmed in the TC? I found a interview with Lefit Pincay (who rode Sham against Secretariat) where he said he had the privelige to ride Affirmed. He said it was the smoothest ride he ever rode. Riding Affirmed as opossed to a regular racing horse? was like the difference between a Rolls Royce and a VW.

Secretariat not only set the Belmont Stakes record. If you take the splits, his time over the first 9.5 furlongs was better than his record-setting time in the Preakness Stakes. Not quite right. ? Somethingroyal's sire, Princequillo, was the one with the endurance. He held a record for 1 3/4 miles. Somethingroyal's dam, Imperatrice, was a stakes winner. Bold Ruler, Secretariat's sire, had great early speed but not endurance. Secretariat inherited the 'x' chromosome (large heart) from Somethingroyal which was passed to her by her sire, Princequillo (It's passed from son to daughter). Secretariat got it all!! ;D

AP Indy was pure class from the moment he was born.I believe there have been a number better than him over the last 20 years, but he ran biggest on the biggest stages and I really believe he was improving at the end of his 3 year old season. Perhaps had he stayed in training at 4 he would? have displayed the speed/brilliance of horses like Cigar, Skip Away, Ghostzapper, Sunday Silence, Easy Goer, or Holy Bull. Still I rank him one of the best 3 year olds of the past 20 years.

I am so impressed with this victory of AP Indy's. As big a fan as I am of? his grandpa Secretariat, this race was all Papa Slew, that gritty toughness that never gave up and that had always had an extra tank of gas hiding there waiting to be tapped. Love it! I don't know who would have won in a match race between Indy and Swale, but they were both among the greats, and I hope Indy is remembered at least as much as a runner as he is (rightly, of course) as a stallion.

Konami, like most Japanese Publishers, does not develop its own games anymore. However, in the hands of Mercury Steam's Spanish development studio and under the supervision of Kojima Productions, this game turned out to be quite a gem in terms of difficulty level, artistry, story, music, and overall design. I truly cherished playing through this installment of Castlevania. My only gripe was the? overpriced DLC for The Forgotten One.

Off the subject. Just beat the game! Good overall but TOO MANY puzzles! No place for puzzles in an? adventure game. Must be at least 20-30 if not more. Complaints about puzzles in game call KONAMI at 310-220-8330. Hopefully the next one has no puzzles or animals stealing our relics/magic.

Well I too like Castlevania but this game... well platforming sections was boring, riddles was easy (by the way when I hear Castlevania I think riddles ;-)) And I did't like Gabriel. They wanted to create dark hero but they failed. Zobek tells this dark metamorphosis of Gabriel, that he don't care about anything and seconds later we see him helping Baba Yaga because? creators wanted to add retarded level in musicbox which was pointless! I don't think is't bad game but nothing special

As a side note, I nearly fainted watching the end of this Belmont Stakes on TV as I had so much adrenaline running through my body thinking I was about to witness a Triple Crown winner. Gah..

Disgusting comment. Victory Gallop was very consistent and? had been close before. Not going to say anything else - you know nothing of horse racing if you don't see that the jockey pushed Real Quiet too early because he thought his horse had it won. The Belmont is the longest, and he didn't think he had competition. This is the jockey's mistake, not the horse. And don't blame the other one for winning this race.

The difference was their timing in their strides, you can see in the slow? motion that Real Quiet would have won if he had not been at the time in his stride that the head naturally rolls back while Victory Gallop was at the point where his neck is naturally stretched out. Both horses ran well and I would have loved to see them race each other again.

This is the worst Triple Crown defeat since life began. Real Quiet is ahead of Victory Gallop at the wire, Stevens just wanted it more than Ken, he was pushing his horse's neck, Ken did not? and it cost him the Triple Crown. Victory Gallop is future dog food in France, he should be grateful you don't have to be in front to win.

Which horse had the microphone on him? If you listen to this race with good headphones....it's interesting to hear the difference in the horses breathing change throughout the race. At the 2:08 mark,? you can sure hear a grunt from one of the horses. RIP RQ.

@liljkm12: None of those. Fact: at most tracks, the 3/8-mi pole is positioned at the start of the far turn. At Belmont, the 1/2-mi pole is at the start of the far turn. What I believe happened: Kent? Desormeaux forgot this & sent Real Quiet to the lead too early (very common mistake for a jockey not familiar with Belmont to make; ask any of the great jockeys about it). So when Victory Gallop closed at the end, RQ was tired & could not hold him off.

Real Quiet, like Seabiscuit, had to overcome some flaws in statue. IIRC, both had knobby knees and where Seabiscuit was a small horse, Real Quiet was a narrow horse. At any rate, I've always pulled for underdogs in sports--underdogs with big hearts like these two horses had--so, I? had to pour me a few more after I watched RQ lose this race. Victory Gallop had finished second to RQ in the Derby and Preakness--so it was his time.But losing theTriple by a gnat's eyelash is tough. RIP Real Quiet.
