I actually interpreted this scene differently but could be wrong - he says to Kathy, "because...you forget that you got lots of stuff into the gallery over the years AND if I applied they wouldn't have anything to go on"...it's important that he said those two statements right after? each other..here isn't he indirectly telling Kathy that the two of them should apply together because of their real love, but it wouldn't work because Tommy didn't have anything in the gallery?

I don't think in this scene Tommy prefers Ruth over Kathy. I think he's just trying to remain faithful to Ruth as her boyfriend, which is why he replies with having no artwork as an excuse to not apply with Ruth. You see he hesitates at first. I'm sure? he's truly in love with Kathy, he just can't bring himself to admit it.

i agree with afrokid12 - what's so tragic about this scene is that we all (including Kathy) expect that Tommy is about to reveal his feelings about Kathy but instead he doesn't. She? asks him why trying for a deferral with Ruth wouldn't work and instead of saying it's because he doesn't love Ruth, he says it's because he never submitted anything. And you can see the devastation and disappointment on Kathy's face
